Outdoor furniture repair: vinyl straps, wicker strip and cords

Patio furniture rarely fails at the frame. Sun and weather wear out the parts you sit on: straps, wicker strands, cords and sling fabric. Each has its own fix, so start by looking at what your chair is made of.

Aluminum chairs and lounges with flat straps take 2 in or 1.5 in vinyl strapping, fixed with patio strap rivets that match the holes in the frame (7/32 or 1/4 in). The strap is softened in hot water, stretched and riveted, and it tightens as it cools; see how to replace vinyl straps. Sling chairs hold their fabric in the side rails with vinyl spline cord slid through the hem, and mid-century chairs wrapped in cord take oval vinyl lacing cord.

Resin wicker sets are woven from polyethylene (PE) strip. Match an unbroken strand: 8.5 mm flat strip for most weaves, 12 mm flat for chunky ones, or 5 mm round. A corner or an arm usually needs 50 to 120 ft, and the outdoor wicker repair guide walks through the repair.

Rope-style chairs, stools and benches are re-woven dry with olefin cord, and folding zero gravity recliners get new elastic lacing cords when the old ones stretch out or snap. Worn feet take new patio chair feet caps, which slip over round feet about 1.5 in across so the frame sits level again. Whatever the repair, measure the old part before you order, and take a daylight photo to match the color.

  • Measure each old strap along its full path, wrap included, and count the straps.
  • Check the rivet holes in the frame with drill bits: 7/32 or 1/4 in.
  • Soften vinyl strap and lacing cord in hot water; they tighten as they cool.
  • Match wicker strip to an unbroken strand, and the color in daylight.
  • PE strip is for synthetic wicker; natural rattan takes round reed.

Questions

How do I know which strap width I need?

Measure an old strap across the middle while it is still on the chair. Stretched straps measure narrower than new ones: about 1 3/4 in on the chair usually means 2 in strap, and about 1 1/4 to 1 3/8 in usually means 1.5 in strap.

Which rivets fit my chair?

Slide drill bits into a hole in the frame; the largest one that fits gives the size. Our rivets come for 7/32 in holes (100 pack) or 1/4 in holes (50 pack), and most straps use two.

Is sling chair spline the same as reed spline?

No. Sling chair spline is solid vinyl cord that fills the hem of sling fabric and slides into the side rails. Reed spline is rattan that locks pressed cane into a groove. They are not interchangeable.

How can I tell PE wicker from natural rattan?

Look at a cut or broken end. PE is solid plastic all the way through and feels smooth and slightly waxy, while natural rattan shows fibers under a glossy skin. Outdoor sets woven over metal frames are usually PE.
