Chair caning kits and seat weaving kits

A chair caning kit puts the materials for one project in one box, so you do not have to work out sizes and amounts from separate rolls and coils. Kits suit first-timers and anyone fixing a single chair, stool or door.

Which kit you need depends on how the chair was built, so look at the seat frame first. A groove routed around the seat opening means pressed cane: choose the chair seat caning kit, with a cane sheet and the spline size that fits your groove. A row of small drilled holes means hand caning: choose the hand caning kit and weave the seat strand by strand in the traditional seven-step pattern. A frame of bare rails, with no groove and no holes, takes a woven seat: fiber rush on round-railed ladderback and farmhouse chairs, Danish cord on many mid-century chairs and stools, or seagrass. If you are not sure what you have, the guide to pressed cane vs hand caning explains how to tell.

There are also kits for refacing cabinet doors with cane, for general rattan furniture repair and for patching outdoor resin wicker.

Read the box list on each kit before you start. Some include small tools such as an awl, pegs or a chisel; others expect you to have a utility knife, a mallet or a staple gun on hand. The pressed cane seat guide and the hand caning guide walk through the two most common jobs.

  • A groove around the seat means pressed cane; a row of holes means hand caning.
  • Measure the groove width before you choose the spline size in the seat kit.
  • Choose a cane sheet at least 1 in bigger than the groove on every side.
  • Large seats may need a second hank of strand cane or extra rush.
  • Check each box list for the tools you still need.

Questions

My chair has a groove and the old cane is still in it. Which kit do I need?

The chair seat caning kit, with the spline size that fits your groove. You will also want a caning chisel to lift out the old spline without widening the groove; it is sold separately.

How many seats does one kit cover?

The chair seat, hand caning, fiber rush and Danish cord kits are each meant for one average seat; a large seat may need a second hank of strand cane or more rush. The rattan repair kit covers one large or two small chair seats.

Is pressed cane or hand caning easier for a beginner?

Pressed cane is quicker, because the weave is already done and you press a single sheet into the groove. Hand caning is slower and takes patience, but each step is simple. Your chair decides, though: a groove takes pressed cane and holes take strand cane.

Do the kits come with instructions?

The fiber rush kit includes a printed pattern card. For the others, follow the step-by-step guides on this site, such as the pressed cane seat and cabinet door guides.
