Vinyl Straps for Patio Chairs, 1.5 in Wide Replacement Strapping Roll
1.5 in wide vinyl strapping for patio chairs, rockers and lounges with narrower straps. Brown, driftwood or white, in 20, 50 or 200 ft rolls.
Not every strap chair uses 2 in straps. Some patio chairs, rockers and lounges are strapped with a narrower strap, and this flat vinyl strapping is 1.5 in wide for those frames. Measure an old strap across before you order. If it is 2 in, choose our 2 in strap instead; a different width changes the spacing and the look of the whole seat.
Installation is the same as for the 2 in strap: a hot-water soak, a stretch and a rivet at each end. Vinyl is stiff when cool and stretches when hot, then shrinks back as it cools, and that is what pulls the seat tight.
Step by step:
- Count the straps, then measure one from rivet hole to rivet hole around the frame, wrap included.
- Cut the new straps about 10 to 15 percent shorter than that measurement, and fit one test strap before you cut the rest.
- Punch a hole centered near each end and push in a patio strap rivet.
- Soak a few straps for two or three minutes in water that is very hot but not boiling.
- With gloves on, press the first rivet into the frame, wrap and stretch the strap across, and press the second rivet into the hole on the other side.
- Let it cool and tighten, then fit the next one.
Work from one end of the frame to the other so the spacing stays even, and pull each strap with about the same force.
Before you start, look at how the old straps were fixed. Most aluminum frames take rivets in holes, sold separately in 7/32 and 1/4 in sizes. If yours has metal clips at the strap ends, you will need clips instead.
How to choose
Width: lay a tape across an old strap. This roll is for chairs, rockers and lounges with 1.5 in straps; if yours measure 2 in, choose the 2 in strap.
Length: multiply the number of straps by the length of one strap measured around the frame, wrap included. Example: 20 straps at 22 in each come to 440 in, about 37 ft, so a 50 ft roll. The new straps are cut shorter than the measurement, which leaves a little over for a test strap. For a set of chairs, add them all up and compare with the 200 ft roll.
Color: brown, driftwood or white. If the chair alternates colors, count each color separately.
Questions
Can I use 2 in strap on a chair that had 1.5 in straps?
It is better not to. The wider strap crowds the spacing between the rivet holes and changes the look of the chair. Match the width of the old straps.
How hot should the water be?
Very hot but not boiling. Bring a pot to a boil, turn the heat down, and soak a few straps at a time for two or three minutes. Wear gloves to handle them.
Which rivets do I need?
Measure an empty hole in the frame with drill bits. Our rivets come for 7/32 in holes (100 pack) and 1/4 in holes (50 pack), and most straps take two.
My new strap came out loose. What went wrong?
Usually it was cut a little long, or it cooled before it was fully stretched. Cut the next one a bit shorter and keep it in the hot water until the moment you fit it.
