This is our 8.5 mm flat PE wicker strip on its own, for when you already have a weaving tool or need more strip than a kit holds. It is polyethylene, the same type of plastic most resin wicker patio furniture is woven from. Like PE in general it tolerates sun and water; we do not claim a specific UV or weather rating.

Typical jobs:

  • A cracked or unraveled corner on a chair or sofa
  • An arm worn through where hands rest
  • A split along the front edge of a seat
  • A few broken rows on a chair back

The strip goes in dry. Cut out the damaged strands, thread the new strip under its neighbors, copy the over-under pattern around it and hide the ends underneath. A flat prying tool makes the threading much easier near the frame, where the weave is tightest.

A few habits make a neater repair. Pull the strip snug but do not stretch it hard; overstretched PE narrows and looks thinner than the old strands. Cut the ends square so they slide under the weave. Keep the strip flat, with no twists. On a cold day, warm the coil indoors so it bends without kinking.

This strip is for synthetic wicker only. Natural rattan, cane and reed furniture should be repaired with natural material, because plastic strip will not look or wear like rattan.

Sun and weather do most of the damage, so early spring, before the furniture goes back out, is the usual time for these repairs.

How to choose

Length: most seasonal touch-ups, like a corner, an arm or a split seat edge, need 50 to 120 ft. Choose 120 ft for one repair of that size, and 230 ft for several spots, a set of chairs, or a larger section of a seat or back.

Color: dark brown, gradient grey (two-tone), light wood or black. Look at the furniture outside in daylight and match the sun-faded side you are repairing.

Width: measure a strand on your furniture. This strip is 8.5 mm, about 1/3 in. If yours is closer to 12 mm (about 1/2 in), choose the wide strip; if the strands are round, choose the 5 mm round strand.

Questions

How is this different from the outdoor wicker repair kit?

The kit has 230 ft of 8.5 mm flat strip on a reel plus a stainless steel weaving tool. This listing is the strip alone, in 120 or 230 ft.

Can I use it on a natural rattan chair?

No. It is meant for synthetic wicker only. Rattan, cane and reed pieces need natural material to match their look and the way they age.

Will it hold up in sun and rain?

PE in general tolerates sun and water, which is why it is used for patio furniture. We do not claim a specific UV rating, and like the original strands it will fade slowly in strong sun.

Can I paint the strip to match my furniture?

Paint does not stick well to polyethylene and tends to flake off. Choosing the closest color gives a better result.
