Vinyl Straps for Patio Chairs, 2 in Wide Replacement Strapping Roll
2 in wide vinyl strapping for re-strapping aluminum patio chairs and chaise lounges. Brown, driftwood, white or black, in 20, 50 or 200 ft rolls.
This is heavy flat vinyl strapping, 2 in wide, for the strap seats and backs of aluminum patio chairs and chaise lounges. When the old straps crack, fade or sag, you cut them off and fit new ones cut from the roll. Each strap is held by a plastic patio strap rivet at each end, pushed through a hole in the strap and into the hole in the frame. The rivets are sold separately.
Measure before you order. Count the straps, then measure one from rivet hole to rivet hole, following it around the frame, wrap included. If the old straps are already gone, run a cloth tape the way a strap travels: once around each rail for a single wrap, twice for a double wrap.
How the new straps go on:
- Cut off the old straps, pry out the old rivets and clean the frame.
- Cut each new strap about 10 to 15 percent shorter than your measurement, because the warm vinyl is stretched to fit. Cut and fit one test strap before you cut the rest.
- Punch a hole centered near each end with a leather punch, or drill through a stack of straps, and push a rivet into each end.
- Heat a pot of water until it is very hot but not boiling, and soak a few straps for two or three minutes.
- Wearing gloves, take out one strap, press its first rivet into the frame, wrap the rail, stretch the strap across, wrap the other rail and press the second rivet in.
- Let it cool. The vinyl tightens as it cools.
Work quickly, one strap at a time. Hot vinyl stretches easily and cool vinyl hardly stretches at all, so if a strap stiffens before you finish, put it back in the water. Keep the pull even from strap to strap so the seat and back look regular.
How to choose
Width: measure an old strap across. This roll is 2 in wide. If your straps are narrower, choose the 1.5 in strap, so the spacing on the frame stays the same.
Length: count the straps and measure one, wrap included. Multiply the two to get the roll length you need. Because the new straps are cut shorter than that measurement, the total leaves a little over for the test strap. Example: 16 straps that measure 26 in each come to 416 in, about 35 ft, so a 50 ft roll. If the seat and back straps are different lengths, work them out separately. For a set of chairs or several lounges, add them all up and look at the 200 ft roll.
Color: brown, driftwood, white or black. Many chairs mix two colors in a pattern, so count the straps of each color.
Questions
Do I really need to heat the straps?
Yes. Vinyl strap is stiff when cool and will not stretch onto the frame. Soak it in very hot, not boiling, water for a couple of minutes, fit it while it is warm, and it tightens as it cools.
How much shorter should I cut the new straps?
About 10 to 15 percent shorter than the length measured around the frame. Cut and fit one strap first; if it is slack or will not reach, adjust before you cut the rest.
Are rivets included?
No. Order patio strap rivets to match the holes in your frame, 7/32 or 1/4 in. Most straps take two, one at each end.
My chair has metal clips at the strap ends, not rivets. Will this strap work?
The strap itself is the same, but you fasten it with clips that fit your frame instead of rivets. Old metal clips can be reused if they are not bent or corroded.
Single wrap or double wrap?
Copy what the chair had. A single wrap goes once around each rail; a double wrap goes around twice and covers the rivet head. Measure the strap the same way it was wrapped.
