Patio Strap Rivets for Vinyl Chair Straps, 7/32 or 1/4 in Hole, White
White plastic rivets that fasten vinyl straps to aluminum patio chair frames. For 7/32 in frame holes (100 pack) or 1/4 in frame holes (50 pack).
These are the small white plastic rivets that hold vinyl straps on an aluminum patio chair or chaise lounge. Each one has a round head and a ribbed shank. The shank goes through a hole punched in the end of the strap, then presses into the hole in the frame, where the ribs grip. Most straps take two rivets, one at each end.
Old plastic rivets dry out and turn brittle in the sun, so use new ones when you re-strap a chair. Cut off the old straps, then push or pry the old rivets out with a screwdriver and pliers, taking care not to scratch the frame.
The hole size is what matters. These rivets come for 7/32 in or 1/4 in frame holes, and the two are not interchangeable: a rivet that is too small for the hole falls out, and one that is too large will not go in. To measure:
- Take out one old rivet so the frame hole is empty.
- Try the smooth shank of a 7/32 in drill bit in the hole, then a 1/4 in bit.
- The largest bit that slides in snugly, without forcing, is your hole size.
Fitting them:
- Push a rivet through the hole at each end of the new strap. This is easier once the strap has been warmed.
- After the hot-water soak, press the first rivet into a frame hole, wrap and stretch the strap across, and press the second rivet into the hole on the other side.
- On a double-wrap strap, the last wrap slides over the rivet head and hides it.
The rivets are white and work with any strap color and with both 2 in and 1.5 in straps, because only the frame hole size counts.
How to choose
Hole size first. Take one old rivet out and try drill bits in the empty hole. If a 1/4 in bit slides in snugly, choose 1/4 in. If the 1/4 in bit will not go in but a 7/32 in bit does, choose 7/32 in. Check two or three holes; they should all match.
Then the quantity. Count the straps and multiply by two. The 7/32 in pack has 100 rivets, enough for about 50 straps. The 1/4 in pack has 50, enough for about 25 straps. Add a few spares, because now and then a rivet cracks or slips out of your fingers while you press it in.
Questions
Can I reuse my old rivets?
It is better not to. Plastic rivets dry out and crack in the sun, and they often break as they come out. New rivets grip the frame better.
Do they come in other colors?
No, they are white. On double-wrap straps the vinyl covers the rivet head, so the color hardly shows.
Will they work with 1.5 in straps?
Yes. The rivet goes through a hole in the end of the strap, so the strap width does not matter. Only the size of the hole in the frame does.
What if my frame hole is bigger than 1/4 in?
Then these rivets will not hold. Check whether the hole is worn or whether your chair uses a different fastener, such as metal clips at the strap ends.
