On many mid-century and Danish modern chairs, the elastic seat straps are not stapled at all. Each strap end carries a flat metal clip, and the clip hooks into a slot cut along the seat frame. These clips fit 2 in elastic (rubber) webbing and replace worn, bent or missing ones.

Check your chair first. If the frame has a narrow slot along the rails and the old straps end in metal clips, these are the clips you need. If the straps are stapled or tacked to the rail, you need no clips.

Fitting them:

  • Cut the elastic webbing square across, so the end sits flat inside the clip.
  • Slide a clip over the end. Look at an old strap to see which way the lip faces, and match it.
  • Squeeze the clip shut in a vise until it grips the webbing firmly.
  • Hook the clip into the slot on one side, stretch the strap across by the right amount, mark where it crosses the far slot and cut it there. Elastic webbing is usually stretched about 5 to 10 percent.
  • Fit the second clip the same way round as the first, stretch the strap and hook it in. A helper holding the chair makes this easier.

Make one strap first and test it before you cut the rest. Every strap that runs the same way should have the same stretch.

You need one clip for each strap end, so a seat with 6 straps needs 12 clips. If the old clips are bent, rusted or slipping, replace them all at once so every strap holds the same.

The rest of the job is on the re-web and re-pad a chair seat project page.

How to choose

Count the straps and double it. A seat with 6 straps needs 12 clips. If straps run both ways, count both directions, and add a couple of spares in case one closes crooked.

The 10 pack covers repairs to a few straps. The 20 pack covers a seat with up to 10 straps. The 40 pack suits a seat and back, a lounge chair or a set of chairs.

The clips are made for 2 in webbing, the width of our elastic webbing. Before you order, check that your frame has the slot they hook into.

Questions

How many clips do I need?

One per strap end, so two per strap. A seat with 6 straps needs 12.

Will they fit my webbing?

They are made for 2 in elastic webbing. Webbing of another width will not sit right in the clip.

How do I close a clip on the webbing?

Slide it over the square-cut end and squeeze it flat in a vise until it grips the webbing firmly. Match the way the lip faces to an old strap.

My chair has no slot along the rails. Can I use clips?

No, the clip needs a slot to hook into. On a frame without one, fix the elastic webbing with upholstery tacks or staples instead.

Can I reuse my old clips?

Yes, if they are clean, not bent and still grip. Replace any that slip.
