When the cane on a tubular steel cantilever chair breaks through, you do not have to recane it. This is the whole seat, ready to fit: a curved bentwood frame with natural open weave cane already pressed in, made for chairs of the classic B32 design. You swap the old seat for this one with a screwdriver. No caning skills, no soaking, no spline.

Fitting it:

  • Turn the chair over. The seat frame is held to the steel tube from below, usually with four screws.
  • Take out the screws and lift the old seat away. Keep the screws.
  • Set the new seat in place, line up the holes and screw it back on. Snug the screws without forcing them; they go into wood.

Measure before you order. Many makers have built these chairs over the years, and the seat frames are not all the same. Measure your old seat frame front to back and side to side, and send those numbers with a photo of the underside through our contact page before you order, so we can confirm the fit. Then look at where the screw holes sit on your frame, because the screw positions vary too.

The frame comes in four finishes: natural, honey oak, black and white. The cane is natural rattan in the open weave, with the small octagonal holes these chairs are known for. With light and age it mellows to a deeper honey tone.

The cane sits in a groove in the frame, like any pressed cane seat. When it finally wears out, the frame can be recaned with new cane webbing and spline instead of being replaced.

To keep the cane in good shape, wipe it now and then with a barely damp cloth; very dry cane turns brittle. Don't stand or kneel on the seat.

How to choose

Match the frame to the rest of the chair. If your chair has a cane back, pick the finish closest to the back frame, or replace both with our matching seat and back set. Natural and honey oak are wood tones; black and white give a cleaner, more modern look next to the steel.

Then check the fit. Measure the old seat frame front to back and side to side at its widest points, and send those numbers with a photo of the underside through our contact page before you order, so we can confirm the fit. Turn the chair over and note how many screws hold the seat and where they sit. If the size and the screw positions both match, it is a straight swap.

Questions

Do I need to know how to cane?

No. The cane is already pressed into the frame. You unscrew the old seat from below and screw this one on.

Will it fit my chair?

These chairs were built by many makers and the seat frames differ. Measure your old seat front to back and side to side, compare with the size on this page, and check where the screw holes are before you order.

Could I just recane my old frame instead?

Yes, if the old frame is sound. Cut out the old cane and spline, clean the groove, and press in new open weave cane webbing with new spline. A new framed seat saves that work and also replaces a frame that is cracked or loose.

How do I look after the cane?

Dust it and wipe it now and then with a barely damp cloth. Keep it away from heater vents and other hot, dry spots that make cane brittle, and don't stand or kneel on the seat.
