When both the seat and the back of a cantilever chair are worn through, replace them together and they will match. This set is a pair for one B32-style chair: a framed cane seat and a framed cane back, each a curved bentwood frame with natural open weave cane already pressed in. No caning, soaking or spline.

The seat is the simple part. It is held to the steel tube from below by screws: take them out, lift the old seat off, set the new one in place and screw it back.

The back varies more. On some chairs it is screwed through the frame; on others it clips in. Look at your chair before you order:

  • Note how the old back is held: screws, clips or both.
  • If it is screwed, mark where the screws go through and compare those positions.
  • Measure both old frames side to side and top to bottom (front to back for the seat), and send them to us with a photo through the contact page before you order, so we can confirm the fit.

Why a set? New cane is pale and fresh, and an old back next to a new seat looks tired. Two frames bought together arrive in the same finish with cane of the same age, and they darken together with light.

The frames come in natural, honey oak or black. Pick the one that matches the other chairs at your table.

Care is the same for both parts: dust them, wipe them now and then with a barely damp cloth, and keep them away from heater vents and hot, dry spots that make cane brittle. When the cane finally wears out, each frame can be recaned with cane webbing and spline, like any pressed cane seat.

How to choose

Choose the finish that matches the other chairs at your table, or the one you want them all to become. Natural and honey oak are wood tones; black looks crisp against the steel tube.

Before you order, look closely at how the old back is held. Some backs are screwed through the frame, others clip in. Note which yours is and where any screws go, then measure the old seat and back frames and compare with the sizes on this page.

One set fits one chair. If only the seat needs replacing, our framed replacement seat comes on its own, in natural, honey oak, black or white.

Questions

Is one set enough for four chairs?

No. One set is one seat and one back, for a single chair. Order one set per chair.

How is the back attached?

It depends on your chair. Some backs are screwed through the frame, others clip in. Look at your old back, note how it is held and where any screws are, and compare before you order.

Do I need any caning tools?

No. The cane is already pressed into both frames. A screwdriver is all the seat needs.

Will the new cane match my other chairs?

New cane is lighter than cane that has been in the light for years, and it darkens gradually. If the other chairs keep their old cane, expect a difference at first.

Can I buy just the seat?

Yes. The framed replacement seat is sold on its own, in natural, honey oak, black or white. This set is for when the back needs replacing too.
