Every roll is measured before it ships. Natural material: color and grain vary. Soak about 30 minutes before use.

These are flat sheets of natural open weave cane webbing, cut from the roll and packed flat. Because they never sit coiled in a box, there is no curl to fight when you lay one on a small project: a stool seat, a single cabinet door, the bottom of a tray.

Open weave is the classic pattern with octagonal holes, the one most people picture when they think of a cane chair.

Each sheet covers an opening or a seat groove about 2 in smaller than the sheet in both directions, which leaves 1 in on every side to staple or wedge:

  • 12 x 12 in: openings up to 10 x 10 in, such as trays, box lids and small frames
  • 18 x 18 in: up to 16 x 16 in, such as a stool seat or a small cabinet door
  • 24 x 24 in: up to 22 x 22 in, such as a larger seat or a square door
  • 24 x 36 in: up to 22 x 34 in, such as a tall cabinet door

For a pressed seat, soak the sheet in warm water for about 30 minutes, lay it shiny side up with the weave square to the front edge, and tap it into the groove with wedges. Trim the excess, run glue into the groove and lock it with reed spline that matches your groove width.

For a door or frame, soak it the same way, then glue and staple it to the back of the frame and trim. As it dries, the sheet shrinks a little and draws flat and tight.

How to choose

Measure the opening, or the seat from groove to groove, both ways. Add 2 in to each number and pick the smallest sheet that covers both. A stool seat that measures 15 x 14 in groove to groove needs 17 x 16 in, so the 18 x 18 in sheet. A cabinet door opening of 20 x 30 in needs 22 x 32 in, so the 24 x 36 in sheet.

If the numbers land well under a size, you will trim a bit more, which is fine. If your piece needs more than 24 x 36 in, or you want a different weave, our cut-to-size sheet is made to your exact numbers.

Questions

Do I need to flatten the sheet before I use it?

No, it ships flat and stays flat. You still soak it about 30 minutes before fitting it, so it bends without cracking and tightens as it dries.

Can I cut one sheet into smaller pieces?

Yes. Cut with sharp scissors or a utility knife, following a straight row of the weave so the pieces stay square.

Which way should the weave run on a chair seat?

Line up one set of straight strands with the front edge of the seat, so the pattern looks square from where people see it.

Is spline included?

No, the sheet is cane only. For a pressed seat, add reed spline sized to your groove and some wood glue.
