This is a printed look, not woven cane. It is self-adhesive vinyl contact paper with a photograph of open weave cane printed on it. The surface is flat and smooth. There are no real holes, so light and air do not pass through, and it has none of the texture or shine of rattan. What it gives you is the cane look on a flat surface, quickly, with nothing more than scissors and a craft knife.

It suits renters and quick makeovers:

  • Drawer fronts and the backs of open shelves
  • Flat cabinet door panels
  • An accent wall, or a section of one

Each roll is 17.7 in wide and 118 in long, about 14.5 sq ft.

It needs a smooth, clean, dry surface. It will not hold well on textured walls, rough wood or dusty paint, so wipe the surface first and let it dry.

To apply:

  • Measure the area and cut the piece a little larger than you need.
  • Peel back a few inches of backing, line up the top edge and press it down.
  • Pull the backing away slowly with one hand while you smooth the paper with the other, from the center out, with a plastic card or a squeegee.
  • Push bubbles out toward the edge. A small one can be pricked with a pin and pressed flat.
  • Trim the extra along the edge with a sharp craft knife.

When you use more than one strip, line up the printed pattern across the seam before you press the second strip down.

It peels off when you want a change. On painted walls, try a small piece in a hidden spot first, because weak or fresh paint can lift with it.

If you want real cane, with open holes you can see through, look at our natural cane webbing instead.

How to choose

Color: natural beige is the pale, honey-blond tone of undyed cane. Honey brown is a warmer, darker tone that sits well next to walnut and other dark wood.

How much: one roll is a strip 17.7 in wide and 118 in long. For drawer fronts and door panels up to 17.7 in across, add up their heights and compare with 118 in, leaving a little extra for trimming. For a wall up to about 9 ft high, one roll gives one full-height strip, so divide the width of the wall in inches by 17.7 and round up to get the number of rolls. Allow some extra for lining up the pattern at the seams.

Questions

Is this real cane?

No. It is vinyl contact paper with a printed photo of open weave cane. It is flat and smooth, with no holes, so it gives the look only.

Will it damage my wall when I take it off?

It is made to peel off. Paint that is weak, fresh or poorly bonded can lift with it, so test a small piece in a hidden spot first and peel slowly.

Will it stick to a textured wall or raw wood?

Not well. It needs a smooth, clean, dry surface. On a textured wall the paper sits on the bumps and lifts, and raw wood is too rough and dusty for a good bond.

Can I use it in a kitchen or bathroom?

On cabinet panels and shelf backs, yes. Wipe it with a damp cloth rather than a wet sponge, and keep it away from heat, such as the wall right behind a stove, and from places that stay wet, such as inside a shower.
